This page explains how The Underground Boston researches, writes, scores and updates its coffee gear guides.
Research
Every guide begins with a single topic, for example “best moka pot” or “best espresso machine for beginners”. We gather the Amazon listings that match that topic and read each one in full: title, feature bullets, product description, specifications and what is in the box. Only facts found in a product’s own listing are used to describe that product. When a listing contradicts itself, we leave the number out or say that the listing gives two different values.
Writing
Our editors use research and writing tools to organize listing data and draft early copy. A human editor then reads every sentence, checks each claim against the listing, removes anything that cannot be supported and approves the final article. Nothing is published without that review.
How We Score
Each product is scored out of 10 on four criteria that fit the guide’s topic. Typical criteria include brewing or grinding features, build and materials, ease of use and cleaning, and fit for the buyer the guide is written for. The overall score is a weighted average of those criteria. Scores compare products within one guide; they are not lab measurements.
What we leave out
- Prices, discounts, star ratings and review counts, because they change constantly.
- Health, safety or environmental claims, even when a listing makes them.
- Claims of hands-on testing or long-term ownership.
Independence
As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Brands do not pay for placement, and they do not review our articles before publication.
Corrections and updates
Listings change. When a product is discontinued, goes out of stock for a long period or changes its specifications, we update or replace it. If you spot an error, tell us through the Contact page and we will check it against the current listing.
